It’s a real shame that letter writing isn’t really a thing anymore. I distinctly remember sending letters when I went backpacking for the first time as a student. I loved the idea that my words would wing their way back home, while I would be waiting eagerly for a reply.
 
There was always something quite magical about receiving a handwritten letter through the post. I never really consider keeping emails, but I have a suitcase on top of my wardrobe filled of letters from friends and family. Just the thought that a someone close to me had put a lot of time and effort into handwriting the letter, then posting it makes those letters extra special.
 
I wanted to make a special bag that was full of this nostalgia, something that was filled with love and joy. This bag is inspired by vintage air mail envelopes, with their iconic red and blue stripes and plane.  I wanted to add a stamp and a stitched franked posting marks, to make it look more realistic.
 
As usual, I’ve made a small batch of these bags totalling five.
Each bag is made from quality Italian white leather and fully lined with beautiful pearlised baby blue leather, with a small internal pocket. I didn’t want to make this bag just a clutch, so I have added a silver chain, so it can be worn as crossbody bag as well. 
 
Once all the leather pieces are assembled, I stitch them together using my trusty companion, 'Gerty', a 1960's Pfaff rolling-foot sewing machine. Finally, I add the finishing touches to bring the piece to life.
